The Best & Worst 80s Cartoon Movie Concepts!

Friday, October 12th, 2007

80slist.jpg

In response to the resurgence of all the great 80s cartoons in Hollywood, we decided to put together another list. We have compiled what we believe to be the 10 best and the 10 worst 80s cartoon movie concepts. First we give you the cartoon, a brief description (for anyone who isn’t familiar) and then OUR movie pitch. We have worked day and night to give you some great and terrible movie ideas!

Keep in mind, that just because something is in the “bad idea” section, it doesn’t mean we don’t love it. This is about whether it is a good idea for a movie or not. Begin wherever you like!

Start at 10 Best! … or start at 10 Worst!

Enjoy!

Spider-man 3… I loved it. Back off.

spiderman3200703.jpg

I may be one of the last people in America to see Spider-Man 3, so one may wonder why I am writing a review. Truth is, I think that I have a unique perspective on the matter. For the past year, I watched the hype build and build. Screen shots, trailers, interviews thrown to the ravenous internet crowd were devoured almost daily. My excitement grew as the release approached, and when it did… Fizzle.

Most people I talked to were either disappointed, or hated it. Cries of “Emo” and “eyeliner” were heard across the land. “Not enough of this” or “Too much of that” were common complaints. My advantage was not going into this HYPE-notized. Spider-Man 3 was far from perfect, but I really enjoyed it. So jump ahead for my thoughts on the pros and cons.

New Zombie Flick: Fido

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

Great to see a fresh take on the zombie genre. Fido is a comedy/horror about a world where people use zombies as personal slaves, but something goes wrong, and all hell breaks loose! I love the interaction between the the boy and his pet zombie. Not much else to say here, just watch the trailer!

Fantastic Four 2 Trailer: Fears Confirmed

Honestly, I feel like this image says it all.  After watching the new Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer  trailer, I am left with the taste of bile in my mouth.  Scenes of Silver Surfer are nice, I admit.  Unfortunately, there are four morons that will ruin the movie.

alba.jpg

Other than the always terrible Jessica Alba, I really don’t blame the actors.  The writers have made a mockery of what could have been a Spider-man quality franchise, and make me cringe at every turn.  Did they learn nothing from the first movie? First, we see Thing actually gets to turn human… AGAIN!  Then after some power swapping (there’s that bile again), we see Johnny with what could only be described as Super Skrull powers.

The problem with the first movie, and seemingly the second, is that they have completely failed to capture the core of the book: Reed Richards’ mind saves the world. All we get is Reed clicking away on a computer and the Human Torch Comedy Hour. In the end, what we are left with is a series of corny jokes and bad ideas that reinvent something that doesn’t need to be reinvented.

I’ll give it a rent just to see the Silver Surfer smack some missiles.

PSST! 2

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

The video above is a preview of the 9 short films released this month from the 2nd PSST! project.

Organized and produced by Bran Dougherty-Johnson of Grow Design Work, PSST is an awesome collaboration of designers and film makers that has produced some amazing results. As described on their site:

…Each film is comprised of three sections produced by three different teams. This process is the whole idea behind PSST! – a technique derived from the Dadaist game of Exquisite Corpse and the children’s game Telephone and applied to the arts of motion graphics, animation and film-making…

The transition from one team to the next is smooth, and the shorts are powerful and cool as hell. It is a damned cornucopia of style and talent.

You can download the all video files at their official website. To get a taste before downloading, I found YouTube versions of BUBBLE EIDETIC SPINDROME and FRACAS GIANT AMERICA! You owe it to yourself to watch these.

Watchmen talk with Zach Snyder

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

rorshach_badge.jpg

For anyone interested, there is now a five minute interview with Watchmen director Zach Snyder on ReelzChannel!  The interview starts with the blood curdling suggestion of Tom Cruise’s involvement that thankfully gets cleared up.  Snyder goes on to make me feel better about the making of this movie.  He seems to have great respect for the book, and is not afraid of a long movie.  Best of all, he is firm that it will take place in 1985, which was a huuuge concern of mine.

The making of a Watchmen movie is a scary endeavor that I would not want resting on my shoulders.  I almost don’t want them to try… almost.  Frank Miller has smartly been involved in the movies of his creations, and the results speak for themselves.  Moore has been hands off and grumpy about the whole thing, and I can understand that he doesn’t want movies made of his books, but these studios are making some serious poo sandwiches out of his masterpieces.  I wish… for our sakes, that Moore would get involved in the Watchmen project and get it done right.

Watch the interview…

Paolo mit dem Pizzablitz

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

I am not entirely sure what this is, or how old it is. All I know is that it entertains the hell out of me. I found it on the blog of a recent commenter. It seems to be associated in some way to Ritter Rost… whatever that is. My lack of knowledge on this is embarrassing, but I just don’t have time to track down the answers to my own questions right now. My German is a bit rusty, but my Italian is strong and they are definitely talking about pizza. And remember… only robots can eat sausage made of knives.

I don’t usually post things for hyped movies, but these screen caps are too damned cool.  As a child of the 80s, my nostalgia ‘o’ meter is spinning out of control right now.  We’ve all seen the trailer, and we knew the animation was sweet, but these have sold it for me.  Images including the one above, and the one of April in the jungle, display some serious lighting effects.

And speaking of April, when the hell did she become a ninja anyway?  Did the writers feel that there just not enough ninjas?  Now I love ninjas as much as the next guy, but she really was the only character that wasn’t a ninja!  Oh well.

New animation by Chris Haughton!

animation.jpg

Chris Haughton sent out an email today, sharing the debut of his new animation for People Tree, a fair trade clothing company.  As I mentioned in a previous post, I love Haughton’s work.  He achieves a surprising amount of power with these simple, lovable little characters.  Take a look at the video!

Thanks Chris!

The Host Trailer

TheHost.jpg

I just watched the trailer for The Host, and I am psyched!  It is a new Korean film that is parts horror, comedy and monster movie.  It is about a simple man (played by accomplished actor Kan-ho Song) and his family who have to rescue their daughter from a huge mutant that emerged from the river.

There is a pretty interesting official website, but you have to enable pop ups for it to work.

I am really loving the poster too.  This is a detail, and the tag line translates to: Daddy, save me!

Three Words.

See Pan’s Labyrinth.

If you don’t like it, I give you permission to punch Eric.  It’s that good.

Madman Movie!

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

allred1.jpg

Mike Allred is one of those special comic creators out there, like Mignola or Miller, that are getting the Hollywood treatment.  Admittedly, I have only read a fraction of what he has done with Madman. From what I have read, the humor, the emotion, the science, and the horror made for a great read.  The great thing about Madman is that he is such an original character that arose in a time where comic heroes were getting the dreaded 90s treatment.

In an interview with AnarchyMusic.net, Allred speaks about the history of Madman, and the Madman movie he is working on with Robert Rodriguez!  Madman sounds like a perfect project for Rodriguez, and I simply cannot wait!

ZONK: Brain Drink for Zombies

zonk!.jpg

This newest gem from Dead Workers Party is this commercial for Zonk Brain Drink.  It is an artificially flavored brain juice for the undead!  Watch as a little girl avoids her demise by offering this fruity/brainy beverage to a group of bloodthirsty zombies.  This leads to what has to be the first zombie pool party in history.  I love the jingle lyrics and the the flavor names.  I’ll have the Medulla Oblongata Kumquata!

Metalosis Maligna

Floris_shorts_meta_bg(530).jpg

Metalosis Maligna is a documentary by Floris Kaayk about a disease which affects patients with medical implants.  Implants become infected and wild metal growth ensues.  The total seriousness with which this film was treated gave me chills.  It reminds me of the newscast scenes from zombie movies in a way.  There are some other shorts to watch as well at microbia.nl that have similar themes of man playing God.  I have a pretty serious internet connection and it took a while for the QT movie to load, but I promise it is worth the wait.

retroCRUSH: The Best Zombie Films Ever

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

zombie-bu-5.jpg

When Halloween rolls around, I start thinking about what horror movie I want to watch. Anyone who has been to this site a few times knows there is a special place in my heart for the undead. While shopping around for a good flick, I came across retroCRUSH’s top 20 zombie movies! I was simultaneously joyous over my discovery, and shamed to see that I have barely seen half of these. I apparently have some work to do. Enjoy the list!
