WOWBOW :: Dog Bed

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

about.jpg

This is a clean design by WOWBOW for a not so clean animal.  The more I think about my dog destroying the wonderfully clean surfaces of this thing, the more the $1300.00 price tag seems extravagant.  In mere moments the acrylic would be covered in snot marks and a collection of fur and dirt would have been deposited under the pillow.  “Look at my ultra expensive dog bed, everyone!  Try to ignore the butt-licking wet spot on the faux suede cushion.”  That being said, I like the design.

Camille Rose Garcia

Creating the perfect mash-up of brightness, darkness, kitch and commentary is no easy task.  I love the feeling I get when I look at the work of Camille Rose Garcia.  I can only describe it as inspiration.  Her paintings are rich in every sense of the word.   Her vintage cartoon inspired characters are just so damned appealing to me, and remind of a time where cartoons could appeal to all ages and carry a message.  Crown Dozen has a nice little interview with Garcia that is worth a gander.

Shok1: Street Artist

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

drawablankclose.jpg

This is a piece from the latest Shok1 show titled Bitch Fight.  Shok1 is a street artist that has made the transition to shows and commercial work.  I am extremely drawn to the work above, and others like it, that incorporate that loose ink stroke and graphic precision.  His exaggerated features and crooked lines capture an urban essence still lacking in many artists sporting the urban drawing styles.  He also has some very interesting thoughts and opinions about the street art movement and why “selling out” isn’t so bad after all.  In an interview with Ammo City, he says:

“… suppose a kid gives a company the tired 80’s cliché that they think they want, takes the money, and uses that freedom to do some next level shit that moves things on? done correctly, that’s taking from the system and putting resources into the movement…”

Classic Arcade Scarves

Bits to Die For sells amazing scarves with pixel-art from Lode Runner, Pong, Space Invaders, and Scramble! These things are sharp; they look to be a perfect, pixel-to-pixel representation. Unfortunately, I live in Florida, so until they come out with Scramble themed light sweaters, not enough need to justify a purchase for me.

Carlo Giovani: So good, I feel bad about myself.

IC_01.jpg

Giovani has his hand in a vast array of media and excels at each one. I will try to keep the butt kissing to a minimum here, but this guy’s range is fantastic. Paper sculpture, illustration, photography and even stop motion animation grace his portfolio. I looked at every piece in his site and enjoyed every minute of it. His ink work is so organic; contrasting the clean graphic elements of the paper characters. Now I must attempt a paper project of my own.

Only thing is his site will resize your browser window to the friggin huge setting if you aren’t careful. Enjoy.

Livingstones

I am diggin’ these stone pillows from Smarin Design. The website details the pattern in which they are sewn to achieve that organic shape. They come in a few different materials including a neoprene that can be used outdoors. Also, for a fun way to trick your friends, simply add one real boulder to the bunch. First person to horribly injure themselves loses!

Metalosis Maligna

Floris_shorts_meta_bg(530).jpg

Metalosis Maligna is a documentary by Floris Kaayk about a disease which affects patients with medical implants.  Implants become infected and wild metal growth ensues.  The total seriousness with which this film was treated gave me chills.  It reminds me of the newscast scenes from zombie movies in a way.  There are some other shorts to watch as well at microbia.nl that have similar themes of man playing God.  I have a pretty serious internet connection and it took a while for the QT movie to load, but I promise it is worth the wait.

The Mystery Gift From Grandma

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

nickelclosed.JPG

For my son’s 3rd birthday, a gift from my grandmother stood out in the bunch. It was a small box wrapped in a paper towel, and bound with a green ribbon. Intrigued, I thought this should be documented immediately. I peel back the layers, and open the box to find a plastic bag containing 23 nickels.

I can imagine my Grandma sitting at the table, picking nickels out of her purse, boxing them up and carefully wrapping the box with a paper towel from the kitchen. And now Grandma has managed to achieve modern art so abstract, that even my sharp artistic mind is baffled.

So to my Grandma, I say thanks for one of the most memorable gifts my son will ever receive. This is worth way more than a dollar and fifteen cents.

SPORTSLISTcampaign-2.jpg

I came across this on Ads of the World and had to share it.  It is for some site where High School athletes can get noticed by college scouts.  There’s not much I can say about this other than it is just an excellent use of that damn cursor arrow.  Striking image?  Yep.  Message recieved?  Well yeah; it’s a website for athletes.  See them here, here and here.

Random Quote 11.02.06

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.

-Pablo Picasso

BLOGGERS NOTE: My 2 year old son’s complete obsession with his Magna Doodle, and any surface capable of being drawn on with a crayon (including but not limited to: doors, walls, tables, chairs, beds, the floor, important documents and occasionally a coloring book or piece of blank paper), bears out the truth of this quote.

Can there be an upward spiral?

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

I found this site the other day and thought it was worth sharing.

It’s a spiral photo gallery.  Not unlike our Marks Project, where we post pictures of markings made on different urban environments, the spiral gallery consists entirely of images of spirals.  All types of images are represented, including architecture, nature photos, man-made objects, computer generated images and even a few that aren’t really spirals at all but appear so due to the composition of the elements in the image.

There is some really excellent photography on display as well, on the off chance you should find yourself more interested in nice photography than in spirals.  But, what are the odds of that?

Click the link below to go to the gallery.
