Dean Trippe’s “Draw Supergirl Meme”

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

supergirl_bg_deantrippe.jpg

A month ago, Dean Trippe weighed in on the ongoing discussion involving the sexist mishandling of Supergirl, from plots to look.  He then held an open forum of Supergirl interpretations from illustrators across the land.  I have posted his, because even after looking at a cornucopia of variations, it is still my favorite.  He has some more heroes on on his portfolio site as well.

I’m just catching the tail end of this thing, but just for fun, I may need to attempt a Supergirl of my own.

New animation by Chris Haughton!

Chris Haughton sent out an email today, sharing the debut of his new animation for People Tree, a fair trade clothing company.  As I mentioned in a previous post, I love Haughton’s work.  He achieves a surprising amount of power with these simple, lovable little characters.  Take a look at the video!

Thanks Chris!

Printable Cold Sores!

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

csAd.jpg

Designed mainly for subway posters, printable cold sores take an overly touched up model, and bring her back to reality.  As the site states:

Nowhere in advertising is the gap between natural beauty and manufactured perfection more apparent than on subway posters. As we wait for transportation, we are unwillingly assaulted by larger-than-life representations of supposedly beautiful salespeople. The large scale of these ads and their extremely close proximity to the viewer offer up more than perceived intimacy, however… they give us the chance to see the mechanical flaws designed to correct their physical flaws.

So download a free pdf and make a statement on the perception of beauty!  Or just stick them on stuff to be gross.

Taylor Mali: “What Teachers Make”

Monday, February 26th, 2007

This thing is awesome.  As the son of two teachers, I can remember having friends growing up whose parents made more money than mine, yet I always felt nothing but pride for what my parents were.  Mali seems to feel the same way, and his intensity is inspiring.  He has a nice website to check out as well.

Silly Pink Bunnies: the artwork of jeremy fish

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

I just had to show off this guy’s art.  My art director recently came back from a big apparel show in Vegas and brought back, among other things, a little booklet containing a lot of hot new t-shirt art.  Artist Jeremy Fish had a pretty big section in the booklet with loads of his artwork on display and I absolutely fell in love with it as soon as I saw it.  When a t-shirt artist falls in love with some t-shirts, you gotta realize, that’s saying something.

The linework in this stuff so crisp and the detail is so sharp, but the concepts are so wild and so just…out there….that a lot of the pieces absolutely crack me up.  The pieces are so totally random too, well, I gues not TOTALLY random.

It seems like skulls (making what I believe is their vehicle debut) and fuzzy bunnies aren’t exactly in short supply.  But I have no problem with that.  Skulls aren’t as high on my list of cool things as Fire and Japan, but they’re up there, and ever since reading (ogling?) the Bunny Suicides, I’ve kind of had a thing for them too.

Don’t tell anyone.

go here to view some more bunnies, and skulls…and assorted coolness.

Our Best Emasculating Names List!

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Vince and I made this a while back and I forgot about it. On occasion, guys may want to attack each other’s manhood by name calling. It is a bit childish, but fun as hell. So this is basically a compilation of all the emasculating names that we have called each other over various emails. So take a look, and feel free to suggest some more!

Masks by Carlos Diez

I saw this on we-make-money-not-art.com and thought I’d share. Fashion Designer Carlos Diez crafted these downright freaky masks, and I can’t help but think that some of them look like skinned ewoks. Take a look.

Observation: The One Armed Wonder

e_eyes.jpg

So yesterday I was waiting for my food at the drive thru window of my local Taco Bell and I noticed an employee working inside.  As she was cleaning up the counters, I realized that this woman’s left arm ended at the elbow.

I immediately began to empathize with this person, and imagined any number of scenarios a disabled Taco Bell employee may have to endure to make that measly paycheck.  My heart filled with compassion and sadness.

Then an amazing thing happened.  She extended her arm, dispelling the optical illusion I had been duped by.  She now had two perfectly functioning limbs to work with.  I felt an enormous weight lifted off of my heart, as if her arm had been miraculously reattached!  And frankly, in my perceived universe… it had been.

Inimical Paradisio [by Jay Snodgrass]

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

Won’t it be great when we’re all dead

and zombieing around?

Everything will be like Prom

except with eating people instead of gowns

and maybe shotguns and survivors

instead of corsages.

And of course all that awkward guilt

about my dancing abilities will be

turned into gnawing hunger

instead of gnawing shame.

The qualities unburdened by any clear

critical stance make me blur

with distinction. Healthy trumpets

wake the dead again. I’m cloying.

bil_zliks.jpg

Tahir from urbanretro.co.uk, and Andy from toysrevil.blogspot.com have combined their powers to create Custom Toy Lab!  Created to to provide exposure to custom toy artists, Custom Toy Lab is already cranking out the goods.  I have been a loyal fan of Tahir and Andy for a while, so I know this site is going to flourish.

To promote the launch, they are giving away these one of a kind GID ZLIKS By Bil BetsOvic to one lucky human.  All you have to do to enter the drawing is comment on this post!  These are too damned cool.

Mordicai Sulk (aka Mike Gorman)

goul.jpg

In extreme contrast to his normally bright and cheerful illustrations, Mike Gorman created Mordicai Sulk, an alter ego that paints ghouls and monsters.  These are wildly cool, but the most interesting aspect of this is the contrast between the two sides Gorman’s imagination.  Maybe this is his way of exorcising his inner demons?  Regardless, go compare the Gorman and the Sulk portfolios.  Good or evil, it is all great art.

My uncle Mark has struck again.  This time with a short story that he threw together after finding a Soldier Fly larva.  Not until recently did I know that my uncle has such a bizarre imagination.  Take a few minutes and check it out!
