Our Top 20 FX Suits!

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

fxsuits.jpg

In a time where computer generated graphics rule Hollywood, we thought it would be nice to compile a list of our favorite special effects suits. To create a cohesive list like this, some rules needed to be laid out. The first is that the suit must be wearable and cover head to toe. Second is one suit per movie. We didn’t want a list of Star Wars characters. Are these the twenty best suits? Not for us to say… but they are our 20 favorites.

Boris Séméniako

I cam across Boris Séméniako’s work on LCSV4. The front page of this site is loaded with illustrator links, but Séméniako’s work leaped off the page. His illustrations use quite a bit of collage and as you can see above, they carry some punch. He is also quite adept at political work, as you can see in his portfolio.  Damn… that corn guy is cool.

PSST! 2

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

The video above is a preview of the 9 short films released this month from the 2nd PSST! project.

Organized and produced by Bran Dougherty-Johnson of Grow Design Work, PSST is an awesome collaboration of designers and film makers that has produced some amazing results. As described on their site:

…Each film is comprised of three sections produced by three different teams. This process is the whole idea behind PSST! – a technique derived from the Dadaist game of Exquisite Corpse and the children’s game Telephone and applied to the arts of motion graphics, animation and film-making…

The transition from one team to the next is smooth, and the shorts are powerful and cool as hell. It is a damned cornucopia of style and talent.

You can download the all video files at their official website. To get a taste before downloading, I found YouTube versions of BUBBLE EIDETIC SPINDROME and FRACAS GIANT AMERICA! You owe it to yourself to watch these.

Watchmen talk with Zach Snyder

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

rorshach_badge.jpg

For anyone interested, there is now a five minute interview with Watchmen director Zach Snyder on ReelzChannel!  The interview starts with the blood curdling suggestion of Tom Cruise’s involvement that thankfully gets cleared up.  Snyder goes on to make me feel better about the making of this movie.  He seems to have great respect for the book, and is not afraid of a long movie.  Best of all, he is firm that it will take place in 1985, which was a huuuge concern of mine.

The making of a Watchmen movie is a scary endeavor that I would not want resting on my shoulders.  I almost don’t want them to try… almost.  Frank Miller has smartly been involved in the movies of his creations, and the results speak for themselves.  Moore has been hands off and grumpy about the whole thing, and I can understand that he doesn’t want movies made of his books, but these studios are making some serious poo sandwiches out of his masterpieces.  I wish… for our sakes, that Moore would get involved in the Watchmen project and get it done right.

Watch the interview…

My Sink.

Around sunrise, I noticed a beam of light catching the water from the faucet in lovely way so I grabbed the camera, and clicked away. I am pleasantly surprised with the outcome and thought I would share.

Paolo mit dem Pizzablitz

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

I am not entirely sure what this is, or how old it is. All I know is that it entertains the hell out of me. I found it on the blog of a recent commenter. It seems to be associated in some way to Ritter Rost… whatever that is. My lack of knowledge on this is embarrassing, but I just don’t have time to track down the answers to my own questions right now. My German is a bit rusty, but my Italian is strong and they are definitely talking about pizza. And remember… only robots can eat sausage made of knives.

TMNT Screenshots!

I don’t usually post things for hyped movies, but these screen caps are too damned cool.  As a child of the 80s, my nostalgia ‘o’ meter is spinning out of control right now.  We’ve all seen the trailer, and we knew the animation was sweet, but these have sold it for me.  Images including the one above, and the one of April in the jungle, display some serious lighting effects.

And speaking of April, when the hell did she become a ninja anyway?  Did the writers feel that there just not enough ninjas?  Now I love ninjas as much as the next guy, but she really was the only character that wasn’t a ninja!  Oh well.

Scott from spicybrown.com sent me this link to a flickr set of Tofu Robots doing… things! The pics are fantastic. Some examples would be a Tofu Robot brandishing a knife, or my favorite, a Tofu Robot hugging a bottle of soy sauce.  Thanks Scott!

[You may remember my post about the Tofu Robot about seven posts ago.]

Railroad Square: 3.02.07 (Pics!)

Friday, March 9th, 2007

tosoc1.jpg

Well my wife and I braved taking the kids to Tallahassee’s 1st Friday show at Railroad Square last week. With a three year old on each arm and a camera hanging from my neck, I began to explore each gallery. As usual, it was the students that impressed me the most, and I have some pics of my favorites from the evening. When you find yourselves judging my photography skills, remember the children…

Angel D’Amico

D’amico’s work has such a lovely combination of drawing, painting, digital art and graphic design. I’m not sure how she manages to keep the lines and paint and splatter from blowing away the composition, yet she manages to hold a level of logic every time. This is most clearly seen in her design work in her portfolio. Take a look!

Sketchfighter 4000 Alpha

gallery_18032_19_102789.jpg

I think most boys growing up doodle spaceships at one point or another, and these guys have given it life.  Sketchfighter 4000 Alpha is a completely hand-drawn arcade game from Ambrosia and Lost Minds.  Got to the site to see it in action.  [Source= 30gms]

More than spaceships, my obsession as a kid was what we called Tommy Torture Chambers.  It was basically a drawing of a huge environment that this stick man would navigate through, filled with traps and horrible misfortunes.  An example would be straddling a razor blade slide that dumped the poor fella into the infamous Vat ‘o’ Piss.  Hey, this was middle school people!  Don’t judge me.

I still have one from the old days… I’ll try to track it down and scan it for your viewing pleasure.

Morbid Macro photography

Monday, March 5th, 2007

This one’s for Eric, who’s a big fan of macro photography, but I thought some of the rest of you out there might enjoy it as well. There are loads of sites out in the boundless depths of the web featuring extreme closeups of wide varieties of subjects, of which insects seem to be pretty popular, but this was the first time I’d seen anyone focus on….uhm…smashed bugs. All the photos on the site linked here are of different bugs that have been hit by cars, or I guess they could be photos of cars that have been hit by bugs.

It’s all in the perspective I guess. Like how some people think this stuff is neat, while I on the other hand, think it is freaky AND neat.

If you go online and compare prices before you buy one model or brand of digital cameras can help out, sometimes as much as reading articles and in-depth reviews on your digital camera of choice.
