Shok1: Street Artist

drawablankclose.jpg

This is a piece from the latest Shok1 show titled Bitch Fight.  Shok1 is a street artist that has made the transition to shows and commercial work.  I am extremely drawn to the work above, and others like it, that incorporate that loose ink stroke and graphic precision.  His exaggerated features and crooked lines capture an urban essence still lacking in many artists sporting the urban drawing styles.  He also has some very interesting thoughts and opinions about the street art movement and why “selling out” isn’t so bad after all.  In an interview with Ammo City, he says:

“… suppose a kid gives a company the tired 80’s cliché that they think they want, takes the money, and uses that freedom to do some next level shit that moves things on? done correctly, that’s taking from the system and putting resources into the movement…”

i am not familiar with this dude’s work. its competely awesome though.he seems to be making the transition with a degree of honesty and integrity completely lacking in the shenanigans of publicity hungry “artists” like shepherd fairy and banksy .wonder where he will go from here.
