Hornet Sculpture

This is something I made with my minimal welding skills in 2004. It is the largest piece I have made, standing at around 7 feet tall.

I came up with the concept when I found the large antenna, now the stinger, at a junk yard. The components are mainly scrap that I found around the shop, a freon tank, and a bicycle seat.

The frame from the bicycle seat made for a nice pivoting head.

I used a cross section of a girder for the base. It is quite sturdy, without the bulk.

The added bonus to this project, is that inside this giant metal hornet, a nest of wasps reside. They emerge from what I can only (tastefully) describe as a birthing canal at the base of the abdomen. So now the hornet sculpture is consistantly birthing wasps at all hours of the day.
